The Gift Box, a local gift shop, has hosted its annual Open House for 14 years, featuring local artists.
The Gift Box has been a go-to holiday spot in Syracuse for more than 30 years.
Owner Jan Constas took over the business in 2000, and she has hosted its annual Open House the weekend before Thanksgiving for the past 14 years.
The Gift Box, located at 4317 Fay Road, will present its annual Open House this weekend, selling its original products as well as those from local artists. It will be open Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
“The role of the Open House is to kick off the holiday season,” Constas said. “It’s our busiest time of the year. It is truly wonderful.”
Constas has had the help of her mother to ensure the event runs smoothly. Upon arrival, her mother welcomes visitors with fresh cookies and warm cider to enjoy while browsing through their latest items.
The Gift Box is filled with purchased, handmade or locally sourced items. Ten local artists display their work including knitted pieces, paintings, stained glass and woodwork. Constas supports the local artists by displaying their artwork, and, in turn, she said she hopes people will support small businesses like hers.
This year’s Open House will feature new attractions like a local vendor serving hot dogs and hamburgers. The gift shop will also have fresh holiday wreaths and a tasting bar for its new spreads and dips.
The Open House is a chance for the employees to reconnect with their old customers as well as meet new ones.
“It can be crazy but it’s fun,” said Kathleen Anthony, an employee of 12 years. “We actually have friendships with them. We know their stories and they know ours.”
The Gift Box also collaborates with the Food Bank of Central New York during the holiday season. The shop started collecting nonperishable items for the food bank in early November.
“Everyone likes that too since it’s the season of giving,” Constas said. “A lot of people also donate money. People really like to give to the community during the holiday.”
Betsy Guilfoil has worked at The Gift Box for four years. She said she loves everything about this time of the year for the store because it is the friendliest environment.
“It is almost like a party or a reunion,” she said. “It is all of the loyal and great customers that come in. Every year is even bigger than the last.”
