Pledge involved in Nu Alpha Phi hazing incident not expected to lose fingers to frostbite

The victim, who is a 20 year-old Syracuse University student, will need extensive physical therapy in order to regain use of his fingers. The hazing incident occurred at about midnight on Sunday, when three pledges of Nu Alpha Phi were told to perform exercises at a park for approximately 20 minutes as punishment for “failing to perform their daily duties properly,” police said. Chairman of SU's Board of Trustees supports university considering its options to appeal NCAA penalties

Chairman Richard Thompson said the university has taken responsibility for past violations, and has self-imposed a set of serious penalties. However, Thompson said the university believes, “a number of the penalties instituted by the NCAA are excessive, and I support the University’s decision to consider its options for appeal.” Read more »

Breakdown of Syracuse's academic violations detailed in NCAA report

The investigation does not involve any current student-athletes, and dates back to 2007 when SU self-reported possible violations within the athletics department. Academic violations detailed in the report involve athletes receiving impermissible assistance from tutors and mentors. The violations mainly involved the men’s basketball team, but also included football. Read more »
